The name Carmela is a form of the Hebrew name 'Carmel', meaning 'garden' or 'paradise'. Millie was named after our grandmother Maria Carmela Calabrese. Appropriately, she was baptized at Our Lady of Mount Carmel church. Israel's Mount Carmel, shown below, is called in Hebrew Har ha Karmell (literally, God's vineyard).

Millie was born in the family apartment at 18 Peacock Street in Buffalo's Canal District (inside the red outline) where they lived after moving to Buffalo from Robertsdale, Pennsylvania. The location of the building is shown in green on the map below. Click it to enlarge.
