Agrigento is the ancient Greek city of Akragas,
named for the river that runs to the
Mediterranean. It is protected on the East by a
natural wall of volcanic stone. In antiquity
grottoes and tombs were carved into the stone. On the
hilltop site of the ancient city, the Greeks built
temples to their gods, including the world's largest remains
of a Greek temple, the Temple of Hercules.
The temples are in the Valley of Temples, which is actually
on a hill! The Arabic word "val" means "area or
region", and was transformed to the Italian "valle", which
means valley. |
