As yet, no
primary record of baptism has been found for Mastro Carmelo
Faldetta. His name, approximate birth and death
dates, profession (Master
Cabinetmaker) and the name of his wife Maria Anna Rotulo/Rizzona/Piazza
are known from his marriage record (1), and from the baptism, marriage and death records
of his children:
for example the baptism records of his daughters Maria
Carmela (2) and Paolina (3).
The names recorded for Carmelo and Maria Anna
varied. Carmelo was listed as Carmelus Faldetta
Sutera in his marriage record, and simply as Carmelus or
Carmelo Sutera in subsequent records. Maria Anna
was variously recorded with the surname Rotulo, Rizzone
and Piazza. Their basic surnames undoubtedly were
Faldetta and Piazza, and Sutera, Rizzone and
Rotula were likely 'ngiuria', that is,
personal or family nicknames. Carmelo's surname
probably included Sutera as an indicator of his
village of origin. Maria Anna's Rotulo was
the surname of her mother Rosa. |
