.

From about 1820 through 1865, Sicilian civil birth records reported the details of all births on the left side of a two-page form, reproduced below.  On the right side of the form was documentation that the record had been sent to the local church, and that the Parish had confirmed the baptism of the child and the date of baptism, in this case on the same date as the birth, 13 May 1865.

Day 13 of May 1855 ~
Concetta Abate daughter of Gaetano, and Giuseppa Cimino;  bapt-tized  by  me  Priest  Santo  Cumbo.   Godparents  were  Don Salvatore Milano, and Maria Anna Milano ~

In 1865, the year my maternal grandmother Concetta Abate was born, Sicily was part of the unified Kingdom of Italy, under King Vittorio Emanuele II.  It was five years after Garibaldi and his Redshirts captured Sicily from the Spanish Bourbons and presented it to Vittorio Emanuele, then the King of Savoy, to form the nation of Italy.
In the United States, Andrew Johnson was President, succeeding Abraham Lincoln who had been assassinated the month before Concetta Abate was born.
The Abate surname was sometimes spelled Abbate.

Concetta's father Gaetano Abate was a zolfataio, a sulfur miner.

RECORD OF CIVIL MARRIAGE

Year 1882, day 22 April at hour 10:40 AM in the Town Hall of Serradifalco, open to the public.  Before me Dr. Alessandro Piazza, Mayor, Official of Civil Records, dressed in official garb, have appeared in person:
1st: Leonardo Alessi, single, age 26; sulfur miner, born in Serradifalco, living in said place, son of the late Calogero who resided in Serradifalco when living, and of Angela Di Giugno, a resident of Serradifalco; 2nd: Concetta Abate, a maiden, age 16, a commoner, born in Serradifalco, living in said place, daughter of Gaetano, a resident of Serradifalco, and of the late Giuseppa Cimino who resided in Serradifalco when living.  The couple have asked that I unite them in matrimony; to this effect they have presented me with the documents described below, and through examination of these as well as those already produced when applying for marriage banns, all of which, supported by my review, I insert in the volume of attachments to this register, resulting in no objection to the celebration of their matrimony, I have read to the couple articles one hundred thirty, on-thirty-one and on-thirty-two of the Civil Code, and then asked the groom if he intends to take as wife Concetta Abate here present, and of her if she intends to take as husband Leonardo Alessi here present; and as they have each answered affirmatively with full understanding, and as have the witnesses indicated below, I have pronounced in the name of the Law that the couple is united in matrimony.
At this certification have been present: Rosario Cammarata age 40, sulfur miner, and Luigi Montante age 22, sulfur miner, both living in this Town.
The document was presented and I published the first certificate of marriage banns on 26 February, and the second on the fifth of this past March.  To the above matrimony only the father of the bride has given consent; we were not able to depose her mother, as explained in the request for banns.
The present document was read to those assembled, and is signed by me alone, they having said they don't know how to write.

Matrimonii (Marriages)

This is the church marriage record of my maternal grandparents Leonardo Alessi and Concetta Abbate.  There is an error in the left margin.  It should have the surnames of the groom and the bride, Alessi and Abate.  Instead, it lists the surname of the groom and his mother, Alessi and Digiugno.  Also, in the body of the record, Leonardo's surname is given as Lombardo, which is crossed out and over-written with Alessi.  Note that the church marriage took place the day after the civil ceremony.

Concetta and Leonardo were married during the reign of the second ruler of unified Italy, King Umberto I.  The unification of Italy did little good for the common people of Sicily.  By 1882, our ancestors lived under duress by new forms of taxation and especially by the new Kingdom's extensive military conscription. The Sicilian economy suffered so much that it led to the beginning of the the great wave of emigration, primarily to America.
In 1882 in the United States, Chester A. Arthur was in the middle of his term as President; Jesse James was hunted down and killed, and Thomas Edison invented the first strung Christmas lights.
